How to Slow Down and Enjoy the Holiday

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Wild, crazy, busy, stressful, overwhelming – there are so many negative words that we use to describe the holiday season! But let’s be real, it’s all for good reason. Here are some practices for keeping things calm and collected during stressful times, which I think are especially helpful when guests are in the house, shopping lists are long, and holiday travel is imminent. Here are six ways to slow down and really enjoy the holiday season – take them to heart!

1.Meditate! Meditation, prayer, or just setting aside some quiet time. This works differently for everyone, and there are so many ways you can use that time to focus and unwind. It is good to start your day this way so you can feel rejuvenated and balanced when your busy day begins. There are also apps you can use to help you with meditation. Headspace is a popular App for quick 10-minute meditations.

2.Schedule a group exercise activity. Spending a whole day lazing in the living room with your in-laws can drive anyone up the wall; many find that getting a good workout is an instant, foolproof way to get moods back in order. You can book time at local tennis courts and ice rinks with your family, so you can get all of the cousins (and adults!) out and moving around. Yoga class, long walks, spin class or even something fun like Zumba could also work.

3.Take an aromatherapy bath. It’s tough to find time to actually do this when you have four guests sharing the same bathroom and people to entertain downstairs. But even if you have to do it after everyone has gone to sleep – or, before they’ve waken up – spending fifteen minutes soaking in hot water and essential oils can work wonders for your nerves, mood and spirit. A favorite de-stress essential oil blend is the following: 2 drops lavender, 1 drop neroli, and 2 drop geranium essential oils. Make sure you use your Emmaus Beauty Smiling Beads Body Wash to refresh and soften your skin and you’ll emerge with moisturized skin.

4.Holiday shopping should happen online. It’s true; there’s something so fun and magical about spending a day out and about looking at the holiday decorations in the stores – many particularly adore the holiday windows at Bergdorf Goodman – but shopping online is a major time saver.

5.Do just one thing at once. We have a tendency to glorify multitasking, but in the holiday season try slowing down and focusing on one task at a time – and really getting into it, not letting yourself become distracted or worried by other things – makes every task so much more enjoyable. Put on some holiday music and put your heart into your tasks of wrapping gifts, decorating the house, or cooking your holiday meal.

6.Practice gratitude. It’s easy to lose sight of gratitude during the busy holidays, but it’s what will help center you and make you feel a little stressed. Even if it’s just in between thoughts, think about how grateful you are for your family, health, home, the food on the table, the clothes in your closet, and your great skincare products. When you get into this frame of mind, life feels full. (PS – check out this recent New York Times piece on the emotional effects of gratitude. It’s powerful!)

We hope some of these ideas make it into your holiday season. I know, they’re easier said than done, but a little bit of intention can go a long way!

Thankful for Healthy Skin

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

It is that time of year when we start to ponder all the things we are thankful for. I wanted to share with you that I am so grateful and thankful to finally have healthily clear skin after years of problems. You see, Emmaus Skincare was created as a solution to my own skin problem. I suffer from a condition known as Keratosis Pilaris (KP), more commonly referred to as “chicken skin”. KP produces a goose bump type of appearance on the skin, and can appear anywhere on the body. KP is not life threatening in any way; neither is it contagious; however it is aesthetically displeasing to the eye. I originally set out on a mission to find a natural care regimen to improve my condition, and in the process I discovered a unique combination of ingredients that not only helps with KP, but also with body Acne, ingrown hairs, uneven complexions, scaly skin, Eczema, Psoriasis, and other skin conditions. I am so thankful that I found the key to solve my skincare problems and how I am now able to share Emmaus products with others. My Emmaus products have restored my skin, and I now enjoy smooth, supple, and clear skin and know I am thankful that I am able to share them and help others experience healthy skin. Try my products today so this time next year you can be thankful for your skin too.

How Holidays Mess with your Skin

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Having to spend time with family members you barely speak to all year, packing only tight jeans, going back for a third piece of pie anyway...there's enough to regret over holiday season without skin freak-outs, too.

Things that are delicious have a way of messing with your skin: "Drinking more alcohol or eating more salty or sugary foods can make your skin dry and inflamed," says Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist in New York City. And skin that's dry and inflamed is (awesomely) more prone to pimples and breakouts. "That's common around the holidays," says Fusco. Add stress to the mix of dry skin, alcohol and sweets and you’re headed for breakouts on your face and body.

You can weigh the annoyance of a pimple against the deliciousness of pie, but let's be honest: Pie wins every time. So instead of holding back too much, just try to counteract the effects of all of that holiday bingeing on your skin. Dermatologists suggest being really diligent about moisturizing (which calms the inflammation and dryness) and using a hydrating mask for face for five to ten minutes before putting on your usual moisturizer. Skip anti-agers, like retinol, for a few days if your skin is temperamental. Also cleanse with a gentle body wash like Smiling Beads Body Wash , it contains Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Pumice Powder, and Sunflower Seed Wax to promote the exfoliation of dry, dead, and dull skin cells, allowing new, glowing skin to surface. Then follow with a good body lotion like Softness Bliss Body Lotion to say goodbye to dry dull ashy skin.

The next morning do a mini detox with green tea. "Green tea is great for rehabbing your skin because it's anti-inflammatory," says Fusco. "And try drinking more water than you usually would for 48 to 72 hours after big holiday meals. It'll dilute the sugar and salt in your system, so your skin won't react so strongly."

Good luck out there.

You can order Smiling Beads Body Wash and Softness Bliss Body Lotion online at http://emmausbeauty.com

girl talk: beauty philosophy, skincare products and routines - Our Fifth House

Our Fifth House

Happy Friday friends!  I am so ready for the weekend!  I definitely have my work cut out for me; and I’m looking forward to a completely cleared weekend schedule so I can get things crossed off my list over here.  My bookcase project is turning into quite the time-sucking, energy-draining project.  I thought I was going to be able to scoot by with just two coats of paint, but nope I was wrong.  They’re going to need 3 COATS!  So don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here painting until the cows come home.  But it’ll be nice to have that project done before Thanksgiving, especially since my dining table is currently covered in books and accessories. But enough with the whining about painting built-in bookcases #firstworldproblems, let’s switch gears for a bit and have a little girl talk today.  Let’s chat about skincare products.  I love learning about new …

Cystic Acne – What is it, why do you get it and how do you get rid of it?

by Larissa Corcoran @ Ninja Skincare

What is Cystic Acne? It’s pretty staggering that 80% of the world’s population will suffer from acne at some point in their lifetime. Acne breakouts are caused from the retention of dead skin cells in the hair follicles. The dead skin cells mix with skin oils which attracts bacteria into the hair follicles. This prompts […]

Baby It’s Cold Outside

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Fall is here. We may enjoy the brisk morning and the leaves changing but it can be harsh on our complexions. Cold weather can cause our skin to become dry and flaky. Don’t worry we are here to help.

Tips & Tricks

  • -You can soften these rough flaky patches with a steamy shower. Follow this up with our clarifying Smiling Beads Body Wash for a soft & smooth finish.
  • -Daily moisturizing can help keep these patches from sneaking up on you. Our Softness Bliss Body Lotion with sunflower, coconut & grape seed oil can be just what you need to prevent these stubborn rough patches.
  • -Protecting your skin from the elements is another way you can save yourself from these stubborn skin irritations. Colder temperatures may cause you to change the clothes you are wearing. Wool and other tougher materials can increase skin irritation. Be sure that you are wearing softer materials against your skin and layering accordingly.
  • -Water, water, water. Increasing your intake of fluid intake is another great way to keep your skin looking young and vibrant.

There is no need to be scared to venture out in these harsher weather conditions. Just taking a little extra time and preventative measures can help keep those pesky dry patches under control. So get out there and enjoy the beautiful days ahead.

Why Bathing is a Healing Art

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Whether submerged in a natural hot spring, floating in a high mountain lake, or luxuriating in the warm lapping ocean, water is an essential element for physical and emotional wellbeing. Taking time to bathe in the ancient healing power that water offers can be transformative, and sometimes this simple pleasure is the perfect medicine for whatever ails us. The sensuous comfort water provides connects us back to both our bodies and the Earth’s beauty.

Creating an oasis is not far out of reach in our daily lives, and can be done easily at home. Rather than rushing through another quick shower, try lighting a fewnatural beeswax or soy candles, putting on some soothing music, and draw a warm bath infused with fragrant oils, relaxing salts, or therapeutic herbs. Making this a regular ritual, even just once a month, can improve your health in many ways. Bathing helps relax tense muscles, opens skin pores, encourages digestion, softens the skin, assists in detoxification, boosts the immune system, reduces stress, and promotes restful sleep.

You can take your bath from simply cleaning to healing with the use of medicinal plants. You can choose from a variety of leaves and flowers to customize your experience based on your specific needs and preferences. Some classic herbs to use as a bath tea, salt soak, or for aromatherapy include lavender, rose, chamomile, peppermint, rosemary, geranium, grapefruit, orange, fir, cleavers, oat tops, ginger, jasmine, and ylang ylang. Other fun ingredients to have on hand in your home spa include coarse sea salt, Epsom salt, Himalayan pink salt,French green clay, and bath oils. After a good soak, apply a natural rich lotion to your skin, we recommend you try Softness Bliss Body Lotion. With just a few of these supplies conveniently stocked by your tub, you’ll be ready to pamper yourself whenever the inspiration flows.

Here is a recipe to make your own Bath Salts:

Bath Salt Soak

Ingredients:

2/3 cup salt of your choice: (Himalayan Pink Salt, Epsom Salt, or Coarse Sea Salt)

1/4 cupbaking soda

10-25 drops organic essential oil of your choice: (Lavender, Spruce, Rosemary, Geranium, Peppermint, Sweet Orange, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Rose, Ylang Ylang)

Directions:

Mix salt and baking soda together until combined. Drip in the essential oil and stir well. Sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 cup into your bath as hot water fills the tub. Once dissolved, get in and soak your troubles away.

Eat Your Way to Beautiful Skin

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Everyone wants beautiful healthy skin. Great skin is about using the right skincare products as well as what you put in your mouth. There's an important connection between what you eat and how you look. It is important to learn which foods help you look your best.

A balanced diet is an essential prescription for healthy and youthful, vibrant skin. The good news is that the foods that happen to be good for your skin are also good for your overall health.

Many people find that the appearance of aging skin — wrinkles, thickening, discoloration, and decreased elasticity — is one of their biggest beauty concerns. While genetics largely determines when your skin starts to show these signs of aging, and the extent to which it shows them, environmental damage to your skin, as well as damage you cause yourself through lifestyle choices, can greatly accelerate this process.

Skin damage occurs as a result ofoxidation, a chemical process in which unstable molecules calledfree radicalssteal electrons from healthy cells. The most damaging oxidative stressors that we expose ourselves to are smoking and sunlight.

Aside from using the right skincare products and staying away from cigarettes and using sunscreen when you go out, the next best thing you can do for your skin's health is to eat a diet rich inantioxidants. These are nutrients that work to defend your body's cells — including skin cells — against the damage of oxidative stress. You're probably familiar with some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene). Others, which you may be less familiar with, are collectively known asphytochemicals(there are hundreds of them), and they are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans.

To keep your skin well-protected and nourished, and to extend its youthful appearance, focus on the foods that are good sources of the following nutrients:

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen (which keeps skin firm) and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. Scientific studies have found that when lab animals eat vitamin C — fortified food, their skin is better able to fight oxidative damage. It's important, then, to replenish your skin's vitamin C stores every day by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Good sources include bell peppers (red, green, and yellow), broccoli, cantaloupe, mangoes, oranges, pineapple, snow peas, strawberries, tomatoes, and watermelon.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes and guards your skin against damage from the sun's UV radiation. Some research has suggested that vitamin E may work in combination with vitamin C to provide an extra degree of anti-aging skin protection. However, because recent studies have raised some questions about the safety of vitamin E supplements, this nutrient should come from your diet, not from high-dose pills. It's best to stick with food sources like wheat germ, fortifiedwhole-graincereals, nuts and seeds, olive oil, dark leafy greens like Swiss Chard, and spinach, as well as the small amount of vitamin E found in a multivitamin.

Beta-carotene
Bugs Bunny had it right when he ate carrots as Beta-carotene, another antioxidant that's critical for skin health, is converted to vitamin A in the body and is involved in the growth and repair of body tissues. It may also protect your skin against sun damage. In extremely high doses, however, pure vitamin A from supplements can be toxic, so be sure to avoid them unless a doctor has recommended them and is closely supervising you. Beta-carotene from foods like apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, red bell peppers, mangoes, pumpkin, and sweet potato is sufficient and entirely safe for your skin.

Selenium
Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity. Selenium obtained from food has been shown to reduce sun damage and even prevent some skin cancers in animals. Be sure to avoid selenium supplements, however. The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial found that people with a high risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers who took selenium supplements actually had a 25 percent increased risk of squamous cell carcinomas. The best food sources for selenium are Brazil nuts (no more than 1 or 2 nuts a day because the selenium is so concentrated), tuna (canned, light), crab, oysters, whole-wheat pasta, lean beef, shrimp, whole-wheat bread, turkey, wheat germ, chicken breast, mushrooms, and eggs.

Omega–3 Fatty Acids
Although not classified as antioxidants, omega–3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers — allowing water and nutrients in but keeping toxins out. These healthy fats also reduce inflammation throughout the body, which may translate into fewer skin breakouts. Omega-3s also seem to offer the skin protection against sun damage. In a study of skin cancer, people who ate diets rich in fish oils and other omega-3 fats had a 29 percent lower risk of squamous cell skin cancer than those who got very little omega-3 fats from food. Good food sources include wild salmon, herring, mackerel (but not king), sardines, anchovies, flaxseed, walnuts, and soybeans.

To get the best skin possible; use natural skin care products, wear sunscreen, avoid cigarettes and second hand cigarette smoke, and eat for healthy skin.

How to Love Your Skin

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

The love is in the air. Valentine’s Day is all about love. Make sure this year you practice self-love and learn to love your skin. Forget about tanning, bleaching and heavy makeup. You can learn to love your natural skin tone and complexion. Follow these tips to love your skin and treat it right every day.

Stop Tanning & Bleaching

Learn to love your skin -- no matter how light it may be. Even the palest skin can be beautiful. Forget about tanning. Tanning leads to premature aging, wrinkles and even skin cancer. Protect your skin with sunscreen every day. Also, don't buy into the media hype that you need to have bronze-colored skin every summer and that self-tanner is a must. Those self-tanning products contain chemicals that are not good for your long term health. You are beautiful just the way you are.

Don't lighten up

On the flip side, some women with dark complexions feel the need to try to lighten up their skin. Many celebrities have been suspected of bleaching their skin -- Lil' Kim, Janet Jackson, and Sammy Sosa. Some say even superstars like Beyonce and Rihanna lighten their skin. Beautiful skin comes in every shade. Embrace the skin color with which you were blessed.

Go natural

When applying your makeup, don't aim to cover up your skin -- instead, just enhance it. The natural look is "in" right now, whether you have pale skin and freckles or deep mahogany skin. The Natural Look doesn't mean no makeup. Everyone can use a little help now and then to reduce the appearance of blemishes and other small imperfections. Use a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer that matches the natural tone of your skin. Apply makeup with a light hand -- a little goes a long way. Save the ultra-glam makeup for special occasions, and stick with the natural makeup look for everyday wear.

Treat your skin right

Love your skin and treat it right. In addition to sunscreen, use cleansers, moisturizers and other skin care products that are suited to your skin type. Emmaus Skin Care products are natural and they will give you beautiful healthy skin. Never go to sleep with your makeup on. Drink plenty of water. Don't forget about a balanced, healthy diet -- eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and other vitamins. Read more about what to eat for healthy skin.

Get plenty of sleep

Lack of sleep not only puts you in a bad mood it can also wreak havoc on your skin, causing blemishes, puffy eyes and premature signs of aging. Get at least seven hours of restful sleep a night. Your skin (and the rest of your body) needs the downtime while you are sleeping to rejuvenate.

The Importance of Masking

by Larissa Corcoran @ Ninja Skincare

Why masking is important when combating acne During a free consultation with a potential client, we typically recommend the following 4 products (makeup too if it’s needed): A cleanser A medication A moisturizer A mask For best clearing results, we highly recommend using Ninja products exclusively. This is because other skincare products regularly contain clogging oils […]

New Years Skin Resolutions

by @ Emmaus Beauty: Latest News

Make this the year for healthy, beautiful and glowing skin with these 10 New Years’ Skin Resolutions

1. ALWAYS WASH YOUR SKIN AND MOISTURIZE AT BEDTIME

Research indicates that the skin repairs itself the most effectively at night, so you want to put your skin in the best possible condition for its repair. For those who are too tired to wash off their makeup at night, try this! Your nighttime routine doesn’t have to be done minutes before you hit the bed. Wash your face when you get home from work, or even after dinner. Do it earlier rather than later! Washing off the day’s dirt and grime and nourishing your skin with good moisture and nutrients will give your skin a chance to renew while you sleep. And remember, quality moisturizers (without clogging ingredients) will not suffocate your skin. Do not forget about your skin on your neck and décolleté as these areas need moisture to keep their youthful appearance.

2. WEAR A MOISTURIZER WITH SUNSCREEN DAILY

Studies indicate that 78% of the sun exposure we get in a lifetime is incidental exposure. You may say, “I’m not out at all during the day,” but working in your home or office near windows, walking to your car, and even driving in your car will subject you to unnecessary UV damage. Windshields do nothing to protect you from UV rays. Daylight exposure is the #1 cause of premature skin aging so a minimum of SPF #15 should be used 365 days a year, rain or shine, inside or out.

3. DON’T PICK AT YOUR SKIN

The life of a blemish is just 3-5 days, but when you pick at one, the red mark can linger there for 1-2 months. We know it’s tempting, but you can make problem skin much worse by forcing bacteria deeper into the skin, resulting in scarring and further breakouts. A better solution for problem skin is to get regular facials, so the pores can be cleaned professionally and use skin care products exclusively formulated for your skin type.

4. GET AT LEAST 8 HOURS OF SLEEP A NIGHT

Sleep is important not only to keep dark circles at bay, but it is also the time when your body is most metabolically active, ridding itself of toxins that would otherwise wreak havoc with your skin. Sleep also reduces stress, the #1 aggravator of acne!

5. CLEAN YOUR COSMETICS BRUSHES ONCE A WEEK

Bacteria and oil can build up on your cosmetic brushes, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Using a mild liquid dish soap and cold water, carefully wash out your brushes and rinse thoroughly. Comb the bristles to prevent tangling, and stand the brushes upright in a glass in the sunlight to let dry and destroy bacteria. Cosmetic sponges should be washed with mild soap and rinsed thoroughly after each use.

6. TOSS YOUR BAR SOAP AND EXCHANGE IT FOR A LIQUID CLEANSER

Cleansing your skin with a bar of soap–no matter how expensive it is or how moisturizing it claims to be–is an absolute no-no. The binders that hold a bar of soap together are in an alkaline base (high pH balance) and strip the water and natural oils from the skin, causing the surface of the skin to dehydrate. Then, you have to quickly run and put moisturizer back on to put back in what was just taken out–makes no sense. Skin cells are like just like fish, they need water to live. Your skin cells need to stay moist in order to be healthy; acne conditions and sensitive or dry skin suffers from lack of water. Check out Smiling Beads Body Wash it is a gentle natural body wash exclusively formulated to help skin conditions such as Keratosis Pilaris (KP), Body Acne, dark spots & discoloration.

7. HAVE YOUR MOLES CHECKED

Melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer in the United States. Once a year, you should visit a dermatologist to have a full body check, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer, are fair-haired, or have gotten excessive sun exposure. Early detection can save your life.

8. GET THOSE BLACKHEADS UNDER CONTROL–ONCE AND FOR ALL

Blackheads. We all have them (or at least most of us) and we all hate them. Blackheads are large, open pores containing oil that has oxidized from the air causing it to turn black. Contrary to what most people believe, it’s not “dirt”, it’s simply oxidized oil. You can remove the blackhead but once the oil fills back up in the pore (which it will), the air will cause the oil to oxidize again and now the blackhead is back. To get blackheads under control, you must first remove the blackheads, then use an acid exfoliator to keep the pores clean and use Smiling Beads Body Wash to keep your body blackhead free.

9. MOISTURIZE HABITUALLY

Here are some skin care lessons I’ve had to learn the hard way. For example, I learned not to wax the same place repeatedly with an at-home wax kit or shave with a dull razor. Aside from those lessons, make it habit to moisturize regularly at key times like right after you get out the shower while skin is still damp. Use Softness Bliss Body Lotion a natural moisturizer. Say goodbye to dull, ashy skin! Softness Bliss is exclusively formulated to help skin conditions such as Keratosis Pilaris (KP), Body Acne, dark spots & discoloration. Also make it a point to moisturize your feet so that you are not stuck trying to undo months of neglect a week before sandal season!

10. EAT RIGHT

Perhaps the most important and most overlooked way to help your skin is by what you put in your mouth. Good nutrition is vitally important to the health of your skin as well as your overall wellbeing. Certain foods have powerhouse ingredients that keep skin supple and smooth and help fight age-related damage, says Nicholas Perricone, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and author ofAgeless Face, Ageless Mind. Wondering what to eat and what to smooth on? These skin-saving foods help both ways.

Strawberries: Strawberries have more anti-aging vitamin C per serving than oranges or grapefruit. And research published in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutritionshows that people who eat foods rich in vitamin C have fewer wrinkles and less age-related dry skin than those who don’t.

Green tea: Curling up to a cup of green tea does a lot more than relax you. Green tea is filled with inflammation-fighting antioxidants, Dr. Perricone says. What’s more, research from Case Western Reserve University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham shows that drinking green tea may reduce your risk of skin cancer. And when you add a generous squeeze of citrus juice, the tea’s antioxidants get a boost of staying power, so they remain in and benefit the body longer, rather than being digested quickly and having much of the goodness go down the drain, according to Purdue University researchers.

Pumpkin: Pumpkin’s orange hue is from carotenoids, wrinkle-fighting plant pigments that help neutralize free radicals in the skin, keeping them from damaging the cells that fast-forward aging. “Pumpkin is filled with vitamins C, E, and A, as well as powerful enzymes that help to cleanse the skin,” explains dermatologist Kenneth Beer, author of Palm Beach Perfect Skin. Plus, pumpkin has hydrating properties, Ionescu adds. Although the seeds make a great fiber-filled snack, you get the skin-saving antioxidants from the pulp.

Pomegranate: “Pomegranates are one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits,” Fernstrom says.
Research shows this fruit’s juice has more inflammation-fighting antioxidants than red wine or green tea. Eat some fresh pomegranate or use it in an age-fighting scrub. Apply once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells, suggests Cleo Londono, aesthetician and owner of Metamorphosis Day Spa, in New York City.

Also consider these foods for healthy skin:

Carrots, apricots, and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables.

Spinach and other green leafy vegetables.

Tomatoes.

Blueberries.

Beans, peas and lentils.

Salmon, mackerel and other fatty fish.

Nuts.

With good skin care habits, your skin with be healthy and beautiful for years to come! Make 2016 the year you finally discover the beautiful skin you have within.
