Best Natural Products for Sun Protection and Sun Damage

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

Summer is here, and in full swing. To celebrate, I teamed up with iHerb to pick out my fave pre and post-sun favourite natural products and remedies from their site to share with you. Here's what I've selected for my most recent haul: Pre-Sun Essentials Sunscreen and sunblock is my #1 way to protect from the sun, following of course: a hat and some shade. I also try to keep covered up during the peak sun hours (from 12 - 2 PM) since I have fair skin and tend to freckle and burn. When that's not possible - because, you know, summer involves things like going to the beach - I'm lathering on my sunscreen and sunblock essentials, ranging from SPF 30 - SPF 40. What is SPF anyways? Sun protective factor, or SPF, is a rating of how long sunscreen will protect your skin from ultraviolet rays. For example, when a sunscreen is labeled "SPF 30," this means that 1/30th of the UV rays will reach the skin. Most experts recommend using sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher to ensure you're adequately protected. What I'm loving at the moment are these three products: Babo Botanicals […]

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi Young designers from 46 entered. Sustainable design challenges were set and met. We saw the creations of ten extremely talented shortlisted candidates. And now, after a very tough competition, we can finally announce the winner of this year’s EcoChic Design Award 2017  – meet Kate Morris! Kate won all 3 of the design challenges, including those set by EcoChic Design Award founders Redress, including the Cathay Pacific Uniform Reconstruction Challenge, the Miele Consumer Care Challenge, and the TAL Design to Manufacturing Challenge. But what sealed the winning spot for Kate was her innovative technique of using discarded cones of yarn and cutting old T-shirts into strips to knit with, recycling them into new, colourfully patterned designs. We were lucky enough to catch up with Kate for an exclusive interview about her victory. What initially motivated you to enter the ECDA? I attended a day of workshops on upcycling run by Redress and was so inspired by all the different ways of using waste; I had a set idea of what upcycling was before and this completely opened up my mind set. I met so many like-minded inspiring people at the event and knew I wanted to be involved […]

Natural in Norway: The Best Natural Beauty & Wellness Spots around Oslo - Living Pretty, Naturally

Living Pretty, Naturally

My readers come from far and wide, but not everyone knows that while I am a Canadian, I blog from Norway. So, I thought it was about time that I spent a moment or two answering some emails from Norwegian LPN'ers through a blog post. The most common question I receive from my Norwegian based beauties is "where do I find ____".  So, today I'll answer this question through this Natural in Norway feature. This post will give you lovelies the run down on some of the best natural and/or organic stops in Oslo (and web shops that ship around Norway) - ranging from everything including the Yoga Studios and organic grocers to the health-friendly cafes and raw juice producers - oh, and of course, where to buy some of the fantastic products I post on here on LPN. So without further adieu, let's get into it. Best Organic Food Shops & Grocers in Oslo Røtter Organic Grocer & Natural Foods Røtter is, hands-down, my favourite little grocery shop in all of Oslo. 41 Paleo and Vegan Pumpkin Recipes To Die For

by Chere @ Eluxe Magazine

By Lora O’Brien I have to say, I think autumn may be my favourite season. The air is crisp and fresh, our clothes become comfortably oversized and cosy and PSLs become a daily ritual. What’s not to love about fall? The natural world around us explodes with fiery colour, and the harvests come to our tables. And of course, there’s one crop that we tend to favour the most: pumpkin! Not only is pumpkin packed full of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants that will take good care of our bodies over the impending harsher months, but pumpkins are pretty versatile, and can be throw into anything from chia puddings and ice creams to warming soups to hearty pasta dishes. You may be tempted to buy tinned pumpkin puree, but believe me, the taste of a fresh roasted pumpkin isn’t only much better, it’s also way better for you, since cans are still coated with harmful BPA plastic. If you’re really in a rush or are feeling lazy, why not try frozen pumpkin? I personally roast a bunch of pumpkin all at once then freeze what I’m not using immediately for later use. And speaking of use, I’ve found over 30 of […]

The Pink Dress: Reflections on Wearing Colour

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

There are several entirely rational reasons for not wanting to buy and/or wear colourful clothes: they date faster than neutrals; you tend to get tired of them quicker; they are more difficult to combine with other items of clothing. Often, bright colours are more demanding to wear than navy or beige. Sometimes they even cost more than „normal“ stuff. On the other hand, colour is one of the great joys of life. Colours are gorgeous. They can be cheerful, but also luxurious, romantic or intimidating. I can imagine very few things more intimidating than head-to-toe sharp tailoring in red. There are so many colours that there’s something for everyone. Even if you are a committed colour-phobe, you might be obsessed with the right kind of black or find different shades of grey disturbingly attractive. Where I come from, wearing colour is not the norm. People often tell me that they love a particular forest green or a certain pale lilac, but could never wear it. It’s usually not explained why that is, but I sense unspoken references to the wrong skin tone, to the fear of seeming inappropriately fond of attention, to Northern temperament, to taste that is too superior to be distracted by frivolous colour. You know what? I’m not a natural colour-wearer either. My formative fashion years were in the beginning of the 90s – not a good time for colour. For ages, my idea of being daring was dusty pink (still love it). Over the years, this has changed. It’s partly certainly because I cannot remain untouched..

Need a colonic? Forget it! Want to get your eyebrows done? Wait until Summer holidays in Canada... For years, I continued getting my eyebrows and hair done on every trip home to Canada - I simply hadn't found where the right fit in Oslo yet. Not only that, every trip home (and every work trip to NYC), I'd arrive to a room stacked with boxes from my favourite shops in the US and Canada and dutifully fill up my suitcase (or in some cases, "suitcases") with my favourite superfoods, beauty finds and eco-chic accessories. I've finally started to feel a bit settled when it comes to getting my hair done, and taking care of my health and wellness in the city that I currently call home, so I thought I'd share with you all my Top Places for eco-beauty and wellness in the city of Oslo. Summer 2017 (hahahahahaa!) Reading List: Genre

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

Well, technically it IS still summer. But yeah, I admit, I’m rather late with this. It’s what happens when you order stuff from Book Depository and the parcels arrive one-by-one over two weeks and then you go on holiday before you manage to gather them all. No matter. I will not stop reading genre simply because summer will soon be over and these works are all on my list. As always, I make no promises: I’m sure I will in the end not read every single one – this is meant as inspiration, not a strict plan. I have, however, already finished a couple of things here, as I’m behind schedule with posting. In case aliens and elves aren’t your thing, I’ve also put together a non-fiction and a fiction list. 1. The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi. I have only read one book (Redshirts) by Scalzi, one of the most popular SF writers of today. I liked it, but Redshirts is a bit of an oddity – a Star Trek parody -, so I’ve been planning to read a “proper Scalzi” for a while. The Collapsing Empire is his latest and should be a good fit for me, involving an interstellar empire, a horrible danger, a scientist, a starship captain and an empress. 2. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas. I covered the first two installments in this wildly popular YA series in this post. Short summary: didn’t care much for the first, liked the second a lot. As I’m not a fan of the..

Top 5 Ayurvedic Practices for Natural Beauty

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

Today I am super excited to talk Ayurveda with Uma oils. Keep reading for the Top 5 Ayurvedic practices for your natural beauty. In Ayurveda, India’s 5,000-year-old system of health and well-being, it is common knowledge that outer beauty is a reflection of our overall health. It teaches us that glowing skin truly comes from within and is a result of the way we care for ourselves rather than the potions we choose to use. Of course our favourite products can help to enhance our natural beauty, but the root of true beauty goes much deeper. Like most concepts in Ayurveda, it all starts with bringing balance to any out-of-whack doshas. What you consume either nourishes or depletes your cells and can cause vata, pitta, or kapha imbalances that manifest in common skin issues, such as dry, rough skin for vata imbalances, heat rashes and pimples for pitta imbalances, or acne and congested pores for kapha imbalances. So how do you get that coveted glow from within and maintain your optimal state of natural beauty? Ayurveda has a few ideas. Eat for Your Dosha Type Knowing your dosha type is vital in determining what you should eat to nourish and […]

I Stopped Washing My Face for a Month – Here’s Why You Should Too

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

So here's the thing - I've been planning for a while to write a post on why "I Stopped Washing My Face in the Morning" for a long while. Why? Well, because over the last year, I stopped using cleansers in the morning - completely stopped - here's the reason: Truth is, after a night's sleep (unless you were out in a sand storm battle field while getting your beauty z's), your skin isn't really all that dirty. In fact, you've probably noticed in the morning when cleansing your face, all you're removing is last night's products that you put on to keep your skin youthful and dewy (think serums, oils, moisturizers and eye creams). And to be quite frank, you wanted that on your skin for a reason. What I realized is that, no amount of cleansing changed my skin's behaviour (even using a super gentle moisturizing cleanser) because the truth was, my skin didn't need to be cleansed. So, during the course of the last year, I've used only a gentle Konjac Sponge instead. That's it. Just plain good ol' water, and a low-cost sponge - they're only $10 USD. This is awesome for two reasons: Your (sometimes expensive) cleanser is going to […]

Getting Ready for Autumn: Skincare

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

I own a lot of skincare and generally, I’m fine with that. I do, however, go through buy-purge cycles on a regular basis. More than spring, autumn is when I feel like organising my stash and getting rid of stuff. And then, inevitably, buying new stuff, because autumn is when many skincare launches happen. This year, I have an added incentive: work is tough, so I want to have things figured out and an edit of outstanding products always on hand and ready to use. I will still experiment and change things up, but that’s not a priority for the moment. Therefore, I’ve taken a long hard look at my skincare products and selected my absolute favourites – and also identified what I still need (I use the word „need“ loosely here) to buy. I haven’t given everything else away (although I have given away a rather scary amount), just made sure I have what I want in every category and it’s visible and easy to reach. I plan to do – and have already started – the same process with makeup, clothes and perfumes and I’ll write about that in the coming weeks as well. 1. First cleanse. I seem to prefer oils to balms these days and De Mamiel Pure Calm Cleansing Dew is my current favourite. I love it – the texture, the smell, the performance. I have also ordered the new Eve Lom Gel Balm Cleanser: the original is great, but I have a feeling I’ll like this one even better (hybrid texture!). 2. Second cleanse...

Cheap Face: The Makeup Edition

by Ykkinna @ Life in a Cold Climate

I know I’m not great at „beauty on the budget“ advice, as I usually use pretty pricey products myself and I’m not a professional blogger who tries and assesses everything on the market. This does not mean that I think expensive stuff is always better: there are fantastic products available for reasonable prices, but it takes time to find them. Time that I often don’t have. If I do find something that I believe competes with more expensive options, I’m very happy to share my finds, though. So when I found a couple of great drugstore products recently, I thought I’ll do a budget version of my three-minute face. Categories are (mostly) the same and everything here is quick to apply and easy to transport. 1. Cushion foundation. I have written about the L’Oreal Nude Magique/Lumi cushion before and I still think it’s a great option, but for a drugstore foundation, it’s in fact not that affordable. Maybelline’s Dream Cushion is cheaper (I think I paid a little over 10 euros) and just as good. I haven’t compared them side-by-side, but I think Maybelline is a little bit less dewy, has similar light-medium coverage, blends very easily and looks lovely on skin. It doesn’t last too well if you don’t set it, but touch-ups are very convenient, because CUSHION. Shade 21 is pretty perfect for me. 2. Stick concealer. I’m not a concealer person, but I have been using Maybelline Instant Anti-Age Eraser Eye concealer (in some countries, it’s called Age-Rewind concealer) recently and it’s impressively good. It comes in..

Characterization of heavy users of skin care products among Norwegian women from 2003 to 2011

Characterization of heavy users of skin care products among Norwegian women from 2003 to 2011

Archives of Public Health

Several ingredients in personal care products (PCPs) have been classified as endocrine disruptors (EDs) and concern has been raised whether use of PCPs can affect human health. We aimed to characterize Norwegian female users of skin care products and compare life style characteristics between heavy users and non-users. This cross-sectional study consisted of 114 202 women (age 41–76 years) participating in the Norwegian Women and Cancer study, a large population-based prospective cohort study. Based on self-reported questionnaire data, we classified the study subjects into five groups according to a calculated percentage of skin area creamed per day. Life-style characteristics were then compared between heavy users (using body lotion twice a day) and non-users. Change in use from 2003 to 2011 was assessed through repeated measurements (n = 8484). Heavy users of skin care products had a significantly lower BMI, higher level of physical activity, higher income, higher alcohol consumption, fewer children and a shorter total time of breastfeeding than non-users (p < 0.001). There were significantly fewer current smokers and more former smokers among heavy users than among non-users (p < 0.01). Current and earlier use of oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy or hormonal intra-uterine device were significantly more common among heavy users than among non-users (p < 0.01). The use of skin care products was, to a moderate extent (weighted kappa 0.52), consistent over time from 2003 to 2011, and as many as 91.5% of the women were classified into the same user group ±1 category in 2003 and 2011. Heavy users of skin care products differ significantly from non-users on BMI, degree of daily physical activity, income, number of children, use of hormonal pharmaceuticals, smoking and alcohol consumption. Use of skin care products is common among women aged 41–76 years in Norway, and the use is consistent over time.

Why Beer Is the Next Must-Have Non-Toxic Haircare Ingredient

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

Following up on LPN's castor oil haircare post last week, I thought I'd continue on this trend of unorthodox natural haircare. This time with the focus on the men. I've often hit a roadblock with garnering interest of a more non-toxic lifestyle when it comes to the nearest and dearest men in my life: my dad and brother (and had my boyfriend not lived with me, probably him as well - haha). I finally peaked some interest from them when I told them that beer could be used in their self-care routines, albeit not in the form of a beverage. But rather, in beer haircare. Before having them try out the craft beer-based shampoo and conditioner duo, it was time to learn a bit more about why beer and why in your hair? Beer Haircare: Why? Bröö is the mastermind behind bringing Craft Beer to your haircare routine. With all products made in the USA, and all-natural (they're free of parabens, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, polyquaterniums, phenoxyethanol and propylene glycol), I wanted to know more.  Bröö's formula is based on its main ingredient: all-malt, freshly-hopped craft beer. For ages (we're talking since the Middle Ages), people have rinsed their hair with […]

Confused on what natural skincare is best for you? Check out this Green Beauty Shop

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

Since starting LPN, I don't think I can count how many emails I have received asking me the question: what is the best product for X, Y and Z skincare issue.  As hard as I try, I cannot keep up with the emails - or, I might be able to, but that would result in not having time for a whole lot else. So, when I heard about Marko & Lane, needless to say, I had to share it with you. Ok, so what's the deal with Marko & Lane: they do the product selection for you. They are green beauty fans, and since they're also doctors, they also love the science. A perfect combo. Literally Dermatologist selected skin care regimen -- with all natural products tailored to your skin. When you go to their site, you have the opportunity to fill out their questionnaire - and even include a photo of your face, so the dermatologist can select the best products for your skin. I went through the process that any of their other clients would, including selecting that I had hyper-pigmentation in areas (I am a freckle face as you can see above ;) as well as fine lines that […]

You’re Missing this Oil in Your Natural Haircare Routine. No, it’s not Coconut Oil

by Living Pretty, Naturally @ Living Pretty, Naturally

There is an oil you've been missing in your natural haircare routine, and I'm not talking about coconut oil, although I still love that too. It's from another plant, which your mom might have used for everything when you were growing up. It is, after all, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, a painkiller, an immune system stimulant and, you guessed it - a hair stimulant. Have you guessed yet? It's castor oil. The Oil you Need in Your Natural Haircare Castor oil (like coconut oil) is one of the most versatile (and affordable) oils I've come across in the beauty space, that not only has beatifying properties topically, but also internally. Today's post is going to focus on the topical usage, with a focus on natural haircare and preventing hair loss naturally (although Castor oil has natural antiviral and antimicrobial properties, making it a popular treatment for skin problems known as dermatosis and fungal infections). Tropic Isle Living's castor beans are picked on their own farm in Jamaica. And what's so magic about this all-natural oil is that it is so rich in fatty acids, which work to promote the growth of hair, nails, eyebrows & eyelashes. A large percentage of castor oil contains Ricinoleic […]

Tech Neck Is Now A Thing Ruining Your Skin and Appearance

7 Nordic Beauty Brands | Life in a Cold Climate

7 Nordic Beauty Brands | Life in a Cold Climate

Life in a Cold Climate

I’ve wanted to do a post about Nordic (note that my use of the word “Nordic” is quite loose, including also the Baltics) skincare since I started the blog, but felt that I hadn’t done enough research and testing. I still haven’t done enough and the selection here is in no way comprehensive: I have not yet tried Skyn Island, the Danish Tromborg or Finnish Supermood, nor the very stylish Sprekenhus from Norway – the latter is targeted at men, but I will of course not be deterred by this. I’ve also only included the brands I like and think might be worth checking out. 1. Lumi is an Estonian skincare brand and the most exciting thing to happen on the Estonian beauty landscape for a while. It’s a scienc-y endeavor with inspiration from nature, hemp seed oil being the star ingredient. I have written about their cleanser before and I am still a fan, I also like their hydrating mask with hyaluronic acid. As I’ve said earlier, I would in particular recommend their products to people with dry skin, as the formulas are rich. 2. Estelle & Thild is a Swedish eco brand and although still niche, it’s quite well known outside Scandinavia, too. Everything is good quality, pretty and nice – but in a Swedish way, so without too many frills. I have tried their oils and the hydrating products and liked them. If you’re looking for an eco line minus the hippy aesthetic, this is well worth looking into. They also do lovely baby products. 3. Another..
