The Nine Lives of Cat Stevens: Yusuf Islam Embraces His Musical Past on The Laughing Apple

The Nine Lives of Cat Stevens: Yusuf Islam Embraces His Musical Past on The Laughing Apple

by Jordan Runtagh @ PEOPLE.com

It’s not quite fair to call The Laughing Apple a comeback album. Since 2006, the artist who beguiled listeners in the ’70s as the spiritually curious Cat Stevens has released three discs under the mononym Yusuf—short for Yusuf Islam, his chosen moniker after adopting the Islamic faith in 1977. These works were his first foray into Western music after shunning the industry in the wake of his religious conversion, during which time he sold his guitars and focused instead on charity work and theological study. Fans were grateful for any new output following the decades of silence, but Yusuf’s initial trio of albums were a cautious, occasionally frosty reconciliation with the superstar he never truly wanted to be. On The Laughing Apple, he fully embraces his musical legacy at last. For any who’ve longed for the preternaturally wise acoustic troubadour of yore, the music envelopes like a hug from a long-lost friend—one who’s been away for quite a long time and has a lot to share.

Tellingly, the album is credited to “Yusuf/Cat Stevens,” marking the first time his famous alter ego has appeared on a new release since 1978’s Back to Earth. Much like the hybrid billing, The Laughing Apple builds a bridge between the old and new. The majority of its 11 tracks are rerecorded songs from his initial musical incarnation as a teenage pop star in the mid-’60s, including four titles taken from his 1967 sophomore album, New Masters. While these early offerings suffered from overwrought orchestration, the new versions reveal the underlying melodic beauty with stripped down arrangements reminiscent of his best-known material. That’s no accident; The Laughing Apple reunites Yusuf with producer Paul Samwell-Smith and guitar foil Alun Davies, both of whom were regular collaborators during his ’70s heyday.

In a fitting nod to the 50th anniversary of his recording debut, he includes “Mighty Peace,” the first song he ever wrote. Few artists would dare put their very earliest compositions alongside their most recent, for fear of underscoring their crude creative beginnings. But Yusuf’s musical sophistication, to say nothing of his lyrical depth, has been present from the start. The song holds its own among contemporary tracks like “See What Love Did to Me,” and “Don’t Blame Them”—the latter of which urges listeners to exchange bigotry for empathy. It’s a potent message in a time of travel bans, increasingly violent protests, and rampant fear mongering.

Yusuf’s spiritual journey has made him a target of such blame. He converted to Islam on the eve of 1979’s Iranian Revolution, an event which transformed a matter of personal faith into an apparent political issue. Vaulted into the limelight as one of the most famous Muslims in the Western world, the singer/songwriter suddenly found himself as the unofficial spokesperson of a religion that most in his homeland knew nothing about. The role occasionally brought controversy, but over time Yusuf has evolved into one of the foremost ambassadors of peace on the planet. In addition to his philanthropy—including the founding of several dozen Muslim schools in the U.K.—the 69-year-old has returned to music to help spread his message.

Yusuf spoke with PEOPLE about his new album, peace efforts, how far he’s come and how far he has to go.

What was behind your decision to revisit some of your earlier songs?

I’ve got a bag full of songs I’ve been writing over the years—probably about 20 or 30—but when I started playing some of the early songs again with my guitar, I realized how badly they were recorded in the beginning. I thought I could right this wrong by going back in and recording them the way I feel it today. That, of course, brings a whole new life to the song. There were some gems in there, in my sixties albums, which I really had fun rerecording.

Has the meaning changed for you on any of these songs?

They’re still very relevant, like “Blackness of the Night.” You could have written that today about the refugee problem and about orphans left on the shores of a foreign country. They don’t quite know where they fit in and they’ve lost their homes and their families. That kind of song is still relevant. And then you’ve got “Northern Wind (Death of Billy the Kid),” which I think is very, very appropriate thinking about today. Even though it seems to be talking about the story of the gunslinger, it’s actually an anti-gun song. It’s the story of the sidekick who traveled with Billy the Kid and wanted to hang up his holster and go back home and live an ordinary life again without a threat of guns crowding his life. It’s quite an important song, I’d say.

When you first began writing songs, did you have a specific message you wanted to get across, or a goal in mind?

This album gives very good insight into my original goal because it actually contains the first song I ever wrote, called “Mighty Peace.” The seeds of my dreams began with the dream of peace. In this environment, everything is clashing. You have to survive and drown out the noise. So I think that song lays out my path very clearly. But also, because I grew up in the middle of the West End, which is Theater Land here in London, I was influenced by narratives and musicals. I used to go an awful lot. Hair was playing up the road from us and I saw it so many times. Then around the corner there was Drury Lane with My Fair Lady. West Side Story was perhaps one of the most powerful for me. So I pitched narratives into my songs. They have a kind of beginning, middle and end—it’s a three-act thing.

As far as your writing process, do you hear the song completed in your head in one piece, or do you workshop it through?

I don’t plan what the song is going to be, but I like it to somehow surprise me. If I’m surprised and excited, then I’ve got a feeling whoever hears the song will be excited like I am. I trick myself as I start writing by haphazardly trying something different along the way. It might be a rhythm, it might be a chord, it might be a word. When that happens I know I’ve hit it and I’ve got something special. A lot of what we’re hearing today is quite repetitious. Not all of it! Some of it is very original, and I’ve always looked out for the original.

On The Laughing Apple you began working with producer Paul Samwell-Smith for the first time in nearly 40 years. What was it like making music with him again?

It was great. He’s an artist in his own right. Obviously he’s got a great history with the beginning of British rock as the bassplayer in the Yardbirds. He’s got a great history himself, but as a producer he’s brilliant at understatement. The first time I understood that was when he played for me Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Joni Mitchell. That set the tone for what we wanted our records to sound like.

There was such a huge shift between your ’60s pop work like Matthew and Son and the sparse acoustic work to come in the early ’70s. Can you talk about that transition?

Initially, I was an artist who relied on other musicians to play my music because my producer set it up that way. That’s how it began and that’s how it continued for a long time until I finally got frustrated because I didn’t feel as though people were getting the songs as they should be getting them. And then came the opportunity when I got very sick. I was taken away and removed from the pop world and thrown in hospital. At that point, I had all the time in the world to gather my thoughts and find out what I was doing wrong. The main goal I set for myself was to take control of my own art and not to give it over to someone else to interpret. And that meant playing my own music—playing guitar, and learning to play almost every instrument that I wanted in order to capture the song that I heard in my head.

You mentioned “Mighty Peace,” one of your first songs, which is remarkable when you think how sophisticated the lyrics are. So many themes you’d touch on in your later work were already present this early. Who inspired you as a lyricist when you first started writing?

Dylan obviously had a big effect, but if you look at the blues—the blues are all rooted in real life stories. When you listen to the catalog from Lead Belly, it’s a whole genre and a narrative of what people were going through on the ground in the most terrible situations. So there’s a realism which I started to try to capture in my lyrics, which weren’t to do with completing a lyric for the sake of the song. The lyric had to make sense and the story had to be told.

Looking at this album , another song I really like is “Don’t Blame Them.” I borrowed the melody from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata. The theme of that song is extremely important because it deals with one of the great ailments, unfortunately, which has reared its head again: prejudice. It’s all to do with allowing others to think for you and not find the truth out for yourself.

You’re one of the foremost peace advocates in the world, but not everyone has the same audience and platform that you do. What do you believe to be the most important thing an individual can do to promote peace in this world in times like these?

I’ve thought about this, and you can consider the Peace Train as the symbol. We’d love to see a physical Peace Train arriving on our street and carrying us away into the land of happiness and peace and harmony, but that may not happen. One of the last tours I did was called Peace Train: Late Again. What I realized was that the Peace Train is a metaphor for one’s own life. We begin the journey with our parents and as we go along other people get on the train. We don’t quite know where we’re going to get off, but while we’re in this world, it’s our job to make our tracks as straight and as true as possible. I think even though the truth is hard sometimes, it’s a thing which will save you in the end.

What’s Up with the Back-to-School Supplies

by Betsy @ thatsbetsyv Blogs

Five-years ago I gave birth to my first kid, Ziana Eliz. Fast-forward to today and she’s finally attending school. Sure, she attended Pre-k last year, but lets face it– Pre-k is play school. This is the first year it’s going to be a bit more towards what the rest of her years ahead are going to look like in school. It was also the first year I had to encounter a back-to-school supplies list! Sure, I grew up with them, but didn’t put much thought into it because it wasn’t my money. Now, that it’s our money, I started to think what the hell were all these items for? The hassle of back-to-school lists I know I’m not the only parent out there who questions the the back-to-school list, moans about it and doesn’t fully understand why there’s a list. However, I got down to the nitty gritty of it all by speaking to a friend who is a teacher– who explained why these lists are important for not just our children, but the teachers as well. No, the items aren’t for their own use– I seriously thought ‘okay they’re taking some of these things home.’ Who needs 2 rolls […]

Travel :: Surprise Anniversary Weekend Getaway c/o La Marca Prosecco

by Natalie Ho @ My Little Secrets

It was our two-year wedding anniversary near the end of June. But due to our insanely busy schedules, coupled with a somewhat last minute gallbladder surgery I was notified of, we didn't get the chance to plan an eventful celebratory weekend this year as we had hoped. When I found out that our friends at La Marca Prosecco prearranged a surprise weekend getaway for Kyle and I to celebrate our belated anniversary, we were ecstatic! It’s not often that someone plans on my behalf, so I was incredibly appreciative of this thoughtful sparkly gesture. Our weekend was full of surprises, great eats, adventures, and lots of La Marca bubbly while relaxing, of course! Read the full article →

This $18 Popcorn Popper Will Make Your Movie Night

This $18 Popcorn Popper Will Make Your Movie Night

by Liz Steelman @ PEOPLE.com

This article originally appeared on Real Simple.

What would movie night be without a big bowl of popcorn? It should be a guilt-free choice, but once you add popping oil and butter, the calories can really start to add up. Thankfully, this $18 silicone bowl is your key to a quick and healthy movie night snack.

We first tried the Chef’n PopTop Microwave Popcorn Popper a couple of years ago while doing research for our weekly column, 6 Clever Items to Simplify Your Life. Since then, it’s become one of the most popular items we’ve ever featured. And for good reason: It makes snacking healthier so simple.

RELATED: 3 Quick Ideas for Popcorn

All you have to do is toss kernels (we recommend Tiny But Mighty’s heirloom ones) into the heat-resistant (and BPA-free) bowl. Then fold in the flaps at the top and stick it in the microwave. Stand back and watch the flaps unfold as the kernels burst. In a little over two minutes, you’ll have 10 cups of fluffy popcorn—with no burnt kernels! Pull it out of the microwave using the convenient tabs at the top. Silicone doesn’t conduct heat, so you don’t even need to wait for it to cool down.

Transfer your popped corn into another bowl or eat it right from the tub (Score! Less dishes!) If you still want to add some butter, oil, or other yummy toppings? Go right ahead. Clean up is just as easy—just toss the whole bowl in the dishwasher once you’ve snacked to your heart’s content.

RELATED VIDEO: Food Hack: Make Bacon Fat Popcorn

It’s worth mentioning that sometimes a few rogue kernels escape out the top. Since they’re not cooked in oil, though, they’ll leave no greasy residue on the inside of your microwave. Just pick them up and throw them in the trash.

And, perhaps the ultimate bonus, this handy kitchen tool pays for itself in only a few uses. Kernels are much cheaper than microwave bags.

To buy: Chef’n PopTop Microwave Popcorn Popper, $18; amazon.com.

The Unseen Stars exhibit kicked off on Tuesday, and runs through Friday, Sept. 21. Throughout each day, the scientists will go on a 7-minute animated journey, profiling their careers.

Barbara Corcoran on Her Handsy DWTS Debut: ‘If I Wanted to Grab Any Other Spot, I Would Certainly Have Better Aim'

Barbara Corcoran on Her Handsy DWTS Debut: ‘If I Wanted to Grab Any Other Spot, I Would Certainly Have Better Aim'

by Maria Pasquini and Reagan Alexander @ PEOPLE.com

One of the most surprising moments from Monday’s Dancing With the Stars premiere was when Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran grabbed onto her partner Keo Mostepe’s (very) upper thigh while she got her feedback from the judges.

But on Wednesday, Corcoran said that wasn’t what she meant to do — nor does she think it was really her fault.

“Of course, much ado about nothing,” Corcoran, 68, told PEOPLE at the Season 9 premiere event panel at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. “If I wanted to grab any other spot, I would certainly have better aim.”

“No, I was reaching for Keo’s hand, actually groping for his hand, because I was scared to death about what the judges were going to say,” she continued. “It was just poorly filmed.”

Unfortunately for Corcoran, she had a reason to be scared.

She and Mostepe got kicked off the season 25 of DWTS by receiving the lowest score of the night: a 14.

“Yeah, did you notice how I scored well?” Corcoran joked.

RELATED VIDEO: DWTS Season 25: Barbara Meets Keo

Asked whether her Shark Tank costars Mark Cuban and Robert Herjavec, who had both appeared on DWTS in the pastgave her any advice, Corcoran said, “of course.”

“Well, Robert said, ‘Make sure you pick out a good dance partner, because chances are you will marry them,’ ” Corcoran said. “And that is exactly what my intention is, although I am married, but I will cover that detail soon.”

Herjavec, 55, appeared on season 20 of DWTS and went on to marry his partner Kym Johnson in 2016.

PEOPLE’s special issue 25 Seasons of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is on stands now.

But on a serious note, Corcoran added that “the advice I got from Mark was that was the hardest thing he had ever done in his life.”

Funnily enough, Cuban, 59, who appeared on season 5 of DWTS, also had Johnson, 39, as a partner.

“There is something about Mark that makes you think that nothing is hard for him, he seems to breeze through everything, and I should have believed him and not said ‘yes,’ because this is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life,” she continued. “This is really a confidence crisis for me.”

“I am shocked at how weak I am,” she added. “I thought I was very good at pressure, but I’m not very good.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.

Chrissy Teigen Successfully Crowd-Sourced 6 Brown Bananas from Twitter—and Sent Her Mom to Pick Them Up

Chrissy Teigen Successfully Crowd-Sourced 6 Brown Bananas from Twitter—and Sent Her Mom to Pick Them Up

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Chrissy Teigen loves to make jokes, but she wasn’t joking on Thursday when she asked Twitter to help her find six brown bananas to make banana bread with.

It all started on Sunday when Teigen, 31, tweeted about needing some bananas. “If I bring 4 perfect bananas to the thai temple today can I take 4 brown bananas from the mini Buddah house offerings?” she wrote. “Making banana bread”

But instead of answering her question, people kept giving Teigen their tricks for how to make bananas ripen faster, and just before 2 pm on Thursday, the cookbook author had had enough. “ok this banana thing is getting ridiculous,” she said.

“Don’t tell me your banana browning hacks. Just…if u have 6 BROWN bananas in the LA area lmk,” she continued.

Shortly following her first tweet, Teigen doubled down on her promise, throwing in a couple of added incentives for people to help her out.

“If u have 6 BROWN bananas in the LA area, I will send my assistant to your home with a signed cookbook, John’s underwear and a Becca palette.”

“SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY,” Teigen added. “Please send me a photo of u holding the bananas, giving the peace sign.”

And sure enough, the offers started rolling in.

“Ok and @onairjake has 2,” Teigen wrote alongside a photo of somebody holding 3 browned bananas giving the peace sign. “WE NEED ONE MORE! Or, a single person with 6. This is gonna be a long day.”

RELATED: Chrissy Teigen Had the Perfect Response to a Woman Who Dissed Cookbooks

“SO CLOSE,” Teigen commented in reference to somebody who only had five bananas. “ might kill me if she has to drive to multiple homes across LA.”

But then, Teigen got hit with an offer she couldn’t refuse.

Meg Zukin, the same person who only had five bananas, said she’d be willing to meet Teigen’s assistant and proceeded to tell Teigen where she lived, just in case that was helpful. Teigen replied, noting that her assistant (later revealed to be her mom Vilailuck) and this good Samaritan lived close to each other. “Ok I think 5 will do. Thank you so much she will DM you now!!!” she said.

Want the ultimate dish on the latest celebrity food news, plus exclusive recipes, videos and more? Click here to subscribe to the People Food newsletter.

Meeting up with a stranger has its risks of course, so “just for safety” Vilailuck requested that Zukin “taste a small piece of the banana in front of her before making the trade.”

And then Teigen announced that this whole banana ordeal was over. “The deal has been done,” she wrote alongside a picture of the banana handoff. “Thank you, @bymeg!!!!”

Four minutes later, Teigen posted a picture of her mother carrying the bananas and throwing up a peace sign. “Already home,” Teigen wrote alongside the photo. “That was…so fast. I will now do all grocery shopping like this.”

And Zukin was thrilled with the results of the trade — though she was unsure what to do with Legend’s boxer-briefs.

We may never know whether or not Teigen was serious about crowd-sourcing her bananas from Twitter when she first tweeted about needing them on Thursday, but that doesn’t matter. She got the bananas she was looking for, and it only took her a little over an hour and a half to do it.

For those who offered up their brown bananas but missed out on the opportunity to snag a pair of her husband’s underwear, don’t sweat it. Teigen promises she will “send the runner ups some banana bread once done.”

EP 53: Jim Van Eerden, Co-Founder of Sevenly on being a serial entrepreneur, running a cause-based business that gives consumers a chance to feel connected, and how handling a public business mistake set a new precedent for the future

by @ Business with Purpose

"Duty is ours. Results are Gods." -John Quincy Adams

That quote also happens to be the mantra for Jim Van Eerden, co-founder of Sevenly. Jim has been a serial entrepreneur for most of his life... he's worked in the entertainment industry as an executive producer on major films, he's worked in brand management working for major organizations like the Olympic national committee, the World Cup, and Pepsi. He has worked alongside media powerhouses like Mia Hamm and Serena Williams. And he co-founded Sevenly in 2011 with a desire to change the way consumers felt connected to the causes they cared about.

We also had an important conversation surrounding the controversy that Sevenly experienced a couple of years ago. They have since recovered and have done a great job of rebuilding the brand, but Jim very candidly discusses what happened and how they took an unconventional approach to repairing the damage.

Jim is also a strong man of faith and a believer in family. He and his wife Rachel have 11 children, including a son they adopted from Ecuador who was, quite literally, found naked in a trash bag as an infant.

Jim's business savvy is strong, his faith runs deep, and he has a passion for business unlike any other person I have had the pleasure of meeting in my life. Jim's belief is that people are looking for an opportunity to standup and fight for the beautiful, the good, and the true. People are passionate about being, not barking. People want to do, not yell and fight.

This conversation is one that is going to inspire so many to take action.

ABOUT JIM:

Jim Van Eerden is a serial entrepreneur with a heart for serving others. He co-founded Sevenly in 2011, outfitting world changers in new “cause art” every week, benefitting multiple causes, all under the same mission, “because people matter.” Besides being an intelligent businessman, he is also the loving father of eleven children, and on the foundational teams of many other businesses, non-profits, and charities.

Tim McGraw Wishes Faith Hill Happy 50th Birthday with Sweet Note: ‘You Are the Most Remarkable Person’

by Mariah Haas @ PEOPLE.com

Happy birthday, Faith Hill!

On Thursday, the country star turned 50—and to wish her a happy birthday, husband Tim McGraw posted the sweetest note on social media to celebrate the milestone.

“Happy birthday to the most beautiful girl in the world,” McGraw wrote on Instagram along with a photo of Hill.

“You are the most remarkable person that has ever been in my life….Our daughters could not have a better role model,” he added. “I am truly in love with you more every day.”

“Can’t wait to see what ‘the rest of our life’ has in store for us,” he added.

On Thursday afternoon, Hill shared a video of herself getting visibly emotional after her tour crew serenaded her with “Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you for the birthday love today. I love my family,” she captioned the video.

Hill and McGraw, 50, have been together for over 20 years, tying the knot in 1996. Since then, the country superstars have welcomed three daughters—Audrey, 15, Maggie, 19 and Gracie, 20.

Earlier this year, the couple revealed the secret to their happy marriage: “Just say ‘Yes, ma’am’ a lot,’” McGraw told Architectural Digest.

Joked Hill: “Not saying ‘yes’ all the time!”

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Eating Girl Scout Cookies at the Oscars Is the Internet’s Best New Meme

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Also Samoas-flavored birthday cake.

Can you tell we’re excited about it?

Outfit :: Fall Wedding Florals

by Natalie Ho @ My Little Secrets

I love attending weddings. They are so full of love, laugh, and joy, and well, also gives me an excuse to dress up for the occasion! After attending four weddings over the last several weeks, I must say I've become a pro at dressing as a wedding guest! First, comfort is key. I mean, let's face it, there is much eating and dancing to be done after all! And secondly, dressing appropriately for the venue and type of ceremony is also just as important. If you're attending a backyard garden wedding, you may not want to show up in super high stilettos because I guarantee you'll have a hard time navigating across the lawn! Read the full article →

Beauty Box Subscriptions Pros & Cons: Boxycharm vs. Ipsy vs. Play! by Sephora

by Lisa @ Atypical Familia

EP 54: Hamilton Perkins Collection, Designer Bags with a Purpose

EP 54: Hamilton Perkins Collection, Designer Bags with a Purpose

by @ Business with Purpose

FACT. In the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day. The average American throws away 185 pounds of plastic every year. It can take anywhere from 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade. Instead of saying "Oh man, those statistics are staggering... someone should really do something about that...", Hamilton Perkins, the founder and president of Hamilton Perkins collection actually decided to DO something about that. They create amazing, stylish, and functional designer bags from recycled plastic bottles and repurposed billboard vinyl. Hamilton and I had the BEST conversation... (spoiler alert: my husband said this is his favorite episode to date... and that's saying something!!) You will definitely learn something and be inspired by our conversation!

ABOUT HAMILTON PERKINS:

Hamilton Perkins is the founder and President of Hamilton Perkins Collection, an e-commerce retailer, offering designer travel bags at an affordable price, while holding the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Hamilton Perkins Collection has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, The Washington Post, and Money Magazine.  Hamilton Perkins Collection has hosted trunk shows at Bloomingdale’s and was the winner of the 2016 Virginia Velocity Tour business pitch competition hosted by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Prior to starting Hamilton Perkins Collection, Hamilton was an Investment Advisor at Merrill Lynch and, earlier, worked as an Analyst at Bank of America.

He has also served in a leadership capacity with various non-profit organizations and has been recognized for his volunteer work and service hours assisting low-income populations.

Hamilton is also a contributing blogger for The Huffington Post.  He is a graduate of Old Dominion University with a degree in Business Administration and he earned his M.B.A. from William and Mary.
